The opener “I Ran” gives me an appreciation for Frank Maudsley’s bass like no other version of “I Ran” I’ve ever heard. “I Ran” is known for its iconic video and Paul Reynold’s memorable guitar solo, but this version really drives home how Frank Maudsley’s bass undergirded and propelled it forward. The bass on the next song, “Modern Love Is Automatic”, sounds a bit like punk at the beginning. You think that song is ending but then it starts back up again.There’s an interesting section in the Grammy-award winning instrumental “DNA” when one hears the keyboard and not the guitar being the lead instrument. The bass on “Electrics” has a unique, giddy-up, country-Western feel that’s worth a listen. “ Nightmares” has a number of experimental sounds in it. IMO, 9 of the Seagulls’ best 10 songs are here. I might have replaced “Man Made” with “Never Again (The Dancer)” or “The Traveller” or “Telecommunication” or “Talking” but the cutoff has to be somewhere.The ten songs run a little over 74 minutes.
